Not Currently Being Implemented Project Origins: This project was inspired by the former SIFE Advisor, Dr. Jack Hogue, who wanted to address the growing needs of the Hispanic population in the Charlotte region, particularly in the area of financial literacy. UNCC SIFE members with Spanish speaking abilities will host seminars so that the participants can better understand the material being taught.
Project Objective: The objective is to teach the Hispanic community in the Charlotte region the basic banking skills necessary for financial survival in the U.S. The program also helps to eradicate fears of the U.S. banking system and fosters a positive relationship with local financial support groups. Transitions' first session took place at the Steele Creek YMCA on May 6, 2006. The 18 participants in attendance were students of the YMCA's ESL classes. The session was a three hour class in which the topics addressed included: essential banking terms (both English and Spanish), banking services, opening and maintaining a checking account, and budgeting.
